The new coronavirus is also active in the tears of the infected
The Sars-CoV-2 virus, which is responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, is also active in the tears of infected patients, according to research by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Spalansani in Rome, published in the journal Analysis of Internal Medicine.
In a swab taken from the eye of an infected patient who had bilateral conjunctivitis, the researchers were able to isolate the virus, showing that it could multiply, not only in the respiratory organs but also in the eye, causing conjunctivitis.
The discovery has important implications for general health, and the result, according to Italian doctors, has been passed on to the World Health Organization.
“This research has shown that the eyes are not only one of the entry points for the virus in the body, but also a potential source of infection,” said Conchetta Castileti, head of the laboratory at the Spalanzani Clinic in Rome.
